Museums on Cape Cod

Welcome to the birthplace of American liberty! Cape Cod is more than just sandy beaches and lobster rolls — the cape and the islands are home to a wide array of exhibits to enrich your experience. Whether a history buff, an animal enthusiast or a culture hound, here is a list of some of the best museums on Cape Cod:

John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum

The 35th President of the United States had a deep love and connection to Cape Cod where he would summer with his family and friends. Relive the splendour of the Hyannis Port of the 1960’s with exhibits, such as “Creating Camelot: The Kennedy Photography of Jacques Lowe”. https://jfkhyannismuseum.org

Heritage Museums and Gardens

The whole family will enjoy this engaging experience any time of the year! This garden boasts a museum with art and history exhibits coupled with a 70 acre garden where you can peruse the exquisite hydrangeas, let the kids run off steam at the playground, enjoy the serenity of the Flume Fountain, and take a stroll down the Nature Trail. https://heritagemuseumsandgardens.org

Pilgrim Monument Provincetown Museum

Take in the spectacular view from the top of this extraordinary monument — the tallest all-granite structure in the US rising 353 feet above sea level — which commemorates the Pilgrim’s landing in Provincetown. With a mix of special exhibitions and permanent displays, the Provincetown Museum picnic area is the perfect place to take in the splendor of Provincetown and the Bay.  https://www.pilgrim-monument.org

Whydah Pirate Museum

Arrrrrrr! Interact with actual pirate treasure! This science museum houses pirate artifacts discovered off the coast of Wellfleet, the world’s only authenticated pirate treasure and the largest collection recovered from a single shipwreck in the world! The audio tour is highly recommended. https://www.discoverpirates.com

Cape Cod Museum of Natural History

The mission of the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History is to “inspire appreciation, understanding and stewardship of our natural environment and wildlife through discovery and learning.” Everyone can find something here with a wide array of exceptional and elucidating nature exhibits, such as the Aquarium, Naturescape Gallery, and the Archeological room. https://www.ccmnh.org

Toad Hall Classic Sports Car Museum

What began a dozen years ago as just a few cars in a shed behind the Simmons Homestead Inn in Hyannis Port have become the stunning collection of 50 Classic Cars — all red! This private collection is a quirky yet astonishing wonder to behold. Admission is $8 for adults, but claim to only charge $4 for bored spouses for whom they provide chairs while waiting for their car-nut-counterpart to peruse this quirky, yet impressive, exhibit. http://www.toadhallcars.com

Cape Cod Maritime Museum

Preserving the rich maritime culture through events, collections, public events, and educational programs, this museum is also the host of an impressive Scrimshaw exhibit — the largest private collection of scrimshaw displayed on Cape Cod.  www.capecodmaritimemuseum.org

Atlantic White Shark Center

Although there is a great amount of interest surrounding the white sharks that populate Cape Cod, still very little is actually understood about this fascinating breed of shark. This museum is doing some truly amazing research and education surrounding the white shark. Take a white shark excursion to cruise lovely Chatham Harbour, or book your own charter for a deeper dive into the life of the white shark. https://www.atlanticwhiteshark.org/ Of course, this list is just a few selections of the wonderful museums Cape Cod offers.
